2021 Lexus LS vs. 2021 Mercedes S-Class

Overview

The luxury sedan is a class of vehicles outside of changing trends. There is an elegance and stately appearance to a luxury sedan that represents the premium of today, forging the way for the car of tomorrow. The 2021 Lexus LS and Mercedes S-Class are prime examples. We compare the two here so you can decide which best suits your requirements.

Exterior (Overall Design)

Both the LS and S-Class have three available trim levels. Overall, the exterior Mercedes styling is, as you would expect, classically well-sculpted. The familiar lines are recognizable and restrained; perhaps a little too much. The Lexus is designed with coupe-like lines, striking and stylish. A power rear-window sunshade and moon roof come as standard. Also standard on the Lexus is a hands-free opening function for trunk lids, making life so much easier when your hands are full. The new headlamps for 2021 and exterior trim surrounds give a fresh, updated look to this sedan.

Interior Features

Both vehicles can carry up to five people, but the cargo space is more spacious in the LS, allowing more versatility of use. The Mercedes touchscreen 12.8” portrait display, and four other possible screens, rather dominate the cabin. The Luxury package on the LS provides power-adjustable massaging front seats, a 360-degree camera system, a heated steering wheel, and a whole lot more. This extraordinary package makes the Lexus better equipped than the base model of the S-Class, and still cheaper. New, too, for 2021 are technological advancements on the noise-cancellation system, ensuring the cabin is a relaxing, peaceful place to be.

Engines

There are two engine options with the S-Class. First is the 3.0L inline-6 turbo engine with EQ Boost, which gives 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Alternatively, you might choose the 4.0L V8 bi-turbo engine with EQ Boost, giving 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. There are hybrid versions of the S-Class available, too. However, they are some of the most expensive of their type. Under the hood of the Lexus, you can choose a gasoline or hybrid engine. The gas-powered engine is a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 with 10-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid has a 3.5L Atkinson cycle V6 engine and two electric motors. They give a total system output of 354 hp.

Safety Features

Both sedans have standard automated braking, lane-keeping assistance, and lane-detection software. Standard on the Mercedes is parking assist and collision-prevention technology. You can add optional safety extras, like rear-seat airbags and active suspension that can help reduce damage in a collision. The Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is a range of technologies to assist drivers, using alerts, sensors, and cameras to communicate with the driver. There is adaptive cruise control that also has a lane-centering feature. Safety for your wallet is also built-in with the Lexus, as the manufacturer offers a powertrain warranty and also complimentary maintenance for one year or 10,000 miles.
