Getting your car registration in Mt Kisco, NY, can be a daunting experience. With different forms to fill out, lines to navigate at the DMV, and the cost of registration itself, the whole process is hardly a day at the beach. But with a few simple tips, you’ll glide through the process of getting your registration with ease!

So What’s the Cost?

The cost of registration varies and depends on several factors. For a passenger vehicle, weight is the most important thing to consider. For the lightest cars, those weighing 1,650 pounds and under, the base fee is $26. But the cost can rise to $140 for super-heavy vehicles weighing 6,951 pounds and over.

Auto Registration in New York State

There’s also state vehicle tax to consider along with these base fees. For residents of Westchester County, where Mt. Kisco is located, the fee is between $15 and $30 per year depending on vehicle weight, with all fees to be paid two years at a time. There’s also an MCTD tax to be paid for all vehicles in the county, at a rate of $25 per year.

What if I’m Exempt?

It may be the case that you’re exempt from paying the various registration fees. But parts of the process still can’t be avoided, unfortunately. You’ll need to fill out the UT-11 form to prove you’re exempt. You can get your hands on one of these forms from any DMV Call Center.

There are several reasons for exemption. Many veterans can waive their fees, including those with Congressional Medal of Honor plates and those with disabilities.

What if I’m Changing Vehicles or Moving Elsewhere?

If your registration is due for renewal and you’re planning on a change of vehicle, there’s no need to worry. If there are under two years left on your registration, you can transfer it to your new car, saving you a lot of money and hassle! Just contact the DMV or check their website for details.

If you’re leaving the state and no longer require your registration, you can surrender the registration before the second year of registration begins. That way, you’ll be refunded for the year you haven’t used.

Help is at Hand!

The DMV is more accessible than ever. Necessary information is laid out on the website, while there’s also a live chat function where you can ask a representative a question. We’ve all heard the jokes about the DMV being unhelpful, but the stereotype doesn’t apply so much these days!

In recent years, the DMV has invested in new training and processes, prioritizing customer service. The representatives will be happy to help you with anything you need and talk you through anything you’re unsure of. For best results, use the websites for help anytime!
