Smell
A specific function of the converter is the conversion of hydrogen sulfide gas (a byproduct of the engine’s combustion of fuel) into sulfur oxide, which does not smell. If you smell sulfur or a “rotten egg” odor, it means that the converter isn’t able to convert the gas properly, and fuel that hasn’t been combusted is leaking into the exhaust.
